OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra, calls it a step toward the "AGI era"

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3, trained on more than 100,000 GPUs at its Stargate site in Texas, with a limited preview for trusted partners and full public release today. The model excels at computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity and professional work, and president Greg Brockman called it a "generational leap." Standard pricing is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.

Why it matters: This is the same Astra OpenAI confirmed crossed its "Critical" cyber threshold two days earlier, now shipping as a full product with an explicit AGI claim attached, the first time a major lab has paired a safety-critical designation with an AGI claim on the same model.

Google DeepMind's WeatherNext 3 removes the six-hour lag in AI weather forecasting

Google DeepMind launched WeatherNext 3 on September 3, a model trained directly on raw satellite data that generates hourly forecasts at up to 5-kilometer resolution. Google says precipitation forecasts a day or more out are up to 50% more accurate, with the biggest gains in regions that have historically had unreliable forecasts. It's rolling into Search, the Gemini app, Google Maps and Google Earth Engine.

Why it matters: Weather is one of the clearest cases of an AI model measurably beating physics-based simulation on real-world accuracy, not just benchmarks, and Google is shipping it straight into products billions already use.

AI cloud developer Crusoe triples its valuation to $30 billion in 10 months

Crusoe raised over $3 billion at a $30 billion valuation, up from $10 billion just 10 months ago. Atreides Management and Valor Equity Partners co-led the round, with Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Capital also participating. The raise follows Crusoe's $13 billion, five-year cloud contract to supply Jane Street with GPUs and AI infrastructure.

Why it matters: A company few outside AI-infrastructure circles have heard of just tripled its valuation in under a year, a sign of how much capital is still flowing into the physical build-out layer underneath the model race.
