Sequoia leads $1B round for Valar Atomics, a nuclear-reactor startup built to power AI data centers
Valar Atomics raised $1 billion in equity plus a $200 million credit line in a round led by Sequoia Capital (partner Shaun Maguire joining the board), valuing the small-modular-reactor startup at $6 billion. Valar builds factory-built SMRs pitched as cheaper and faster to deploy than traditional nuclear plants. In June its Ward 250 reactor powered an Nvidia Blackwell system, and the company has a deal with Nvidia to build a waterless 30MW AI data center.
Why it matters: Nuclear power is now a direct AI-infrastructure bet rather than a policy talking point — a $6B valuation says investors expect AI's energy appetite to outlast the current chip cycle.
Anthropic signs $10B, six-year compute deal with cloud startup Volta using a Bitdeer data center in Norway
Anthropic agreed to a six-year, $10 billion computing deal with Volta Infra, using Bitdeer's 121-megawatt Tydal facility in Norway running Nvidia's next-gen Vera Rubin chips. Capacity delivers in two phases, targeting December 2026 and March 2027. It adds to Anthropic's existing compute deals with SpaceX's Colossus site, Amazon, Google, and Fluidstack.
Why it matters: Anthropic is deliberately diversifying its compute supply across an unusual mix of partners — including a bitcoin miner's data center and a startup founded in January — as a hedge against capacity bottlenecks at the hyperscalers.
Base Power raises $1B Series D at a $13B valuation, betting home batteries can outrun grid strain from AI data centers
Base Power closed a $1 billion Series D at a $13 billion valuation — up from $4 billion at its Series C last October — and launched Base Core, a 39-78kWh home battery built at its Austin factory. The company wires batteries directly into homes' local distribution lines, bypassing grid-interconnection queues that stretch past 2029 in some regions, and is installing roughly 100 batteries a day.
Why it matters: AI data centers are straining the grid badly enough that residential batteries are now being funded as infrastructure — PJM, which hosts heavy data-center load, has warned of capacity shortfalls and is weighing emergency power cuts to data centers.
Anaconda buys AI-security startup Enkrypt AI after it found 143,000 vulnerabilities across 25,000 MCP servers
Anaconda acquired Enkrypt AI to add AI security, governance, and compliance scanning to its platform, covering models, agents, and MCP servers. In the two months before the deal was announced, Enkrypt scanned more than 268,000 tools across 25,000 MCP servers and found upwards of 143,000 vulnerabilities, touching 73% of the servers it examined.
Why it matters: A 73%-of-servers vulnerability rate is a concrete number on how exposed the MCP/agent ecosystem actually is right now, not a hypothetical risk — relevant to anyone running MCP-connected agents in production.
SpaceX's first earnings report as a public company shows AI spending outpacing revenue growth
SpaceX's debut quarterly report (covering the AI/Grok/X business under its xAI unit) showed capital expenditures jumping sixfold year-over-year to $18.4 billion, with $15.8 billion of that in AI — more than double Q1. AI-division revenue rose 247% to $2.56 billion on new cloud deals with Anthropic and Google, but the segment posted a $1.26 billion operating loss, and the stock fell despite beating revenue estimates.
Why it matters: This is one of the first times AI infrastructure spending has visibly outpaced revenue growth in front of public markets — a preview of the scrutiny OpenAI and Anthropic will face if and when they IPO.
