Anthropic opens a Milan office, taking its European footprint to six

Anthropic opened a Milan office on 27 May, making Italy its sixth European base alongside London, Dublin, Paris, Zurich and Munich. Anchor Italian customers include Generali, Unipol, Angelini Pharma, Bracco, Enel and Pirelli, with JAKALA running Claude across more than 3,000 seats, Satispya compressing an 18-month engineering roadmap into seven months, and Bending Spoons co-authoring the majority of its code changes with Claude Code. EMEA run-rate revenue is up roughly 9x year-on-year and large-business accounts up 10x.

Four AI lab acquisitions in five days, signalling rapid consolidation

Anthropic, Mistral, Google DeepMind and Meta each absorbed an AI startup within five days of each other in late May. Anthropic bought Stainless. Mistral acquired Emmi AI. Google DeepMind hired the entire Contextual AI team through an $80 to $90 million licensing structure. Meta acqui-hired the team behind Dreamer. The cluster comes alongside Anthropic's record fundraising and rapidly growing run-rate revenue.

The OpenAI Foundation commits $250m to AI worker-disruption research and relief

The OpenAI Foundation announced on 27 May that it will commit $250 million to grants, partnerships and direct work aimed at understanding and softening AI-driven labour disruption. The funds will support research into AI's impact on jobs and wages, direct support for workers and communities facing displacement, and new approaches to distribute AI's economic gains more broadly. A significant portion will go to improving global labour-market measurement systems.

Why it matters: This is the largest single tranche the OpenAI Foundation has put behind a non-health priority, and it frames AI-driven labour disruption as a fundable problem the philanthropy world is now being asked to address.
